Sustainable Japan Award

Sustainable Japan Award

Earth Company

Saraya Co. Ltd.

Reason for the award:
Saraya Co. Ltd. has pursued both business growth and solutions to social challenges since its founding in 1952, with hygiene, the environment and health at the core of its business. Originating with the development of Japan’s first medicated liquid hand soap to help combat infectious diseases after World War II, Saraya has expanded its efforts to address environmental impacts and promote healthier lives.
A notable example is its long-standing environmental conservation work on Borneo in Malaysia, where palm oil used in its plant-based Yashinomi detergent is produced. Since 2004, Saraya has worked to protect biodiversity through wildlife rescue and habitat conservation. In 2005, it became the first Japanese company to join the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), promoting the use and wider adoption of palm oil produced with consideration for the environment and human rights.
Today, 100% of Saraya’s household products using palm oil use certified palm oil. By addressing the environmental and social impacts of its own supply chain and promoting sustainable palm oil beyond its business boundaries, Saraya has, from early on, addressed the environmental and social impacts of its own business activities and demonstrated a long-term commitment to responsible business practices and industrywide change. We highly commend these efforts.

Grand Prize winner,
satoyama section

Bikkuri! ECO Research Institute

Reason for the award:
Based in Kyoto’s Keihoku area, Bikkuri’s Kyoto Satoyama SDGs Meguru Project, redefines food waste as a valuable local resource rather than something to be discarded, creating a new circular system that connects the city with the surrounding satoyama landscape. Food waste generated by hotels and businesses in Kyoto is collected and converted into biogas for energy, and the resulting liquid fertilizer is used by Keihoku farmers. Rice, vegetables and other agricultural products grown with the fertilizer are then purchased by the businesses that generated the food waste and returned to the city through meals and other services, creating a cycle that connects food waste with local agriculture and consumption.
The project is particularly notable for bringing together diverse stakeholders, including local government, community organizations, businesses that generate food waste, plant operators and agricultural producers, with each playing a role in implementing a regional resource-circulation model.
Rather than focusing solely on reducing waste, the initiative transforms food waste into energy and agricultural resources, returning value to both urban and rural communities. By connecting Kyoto’s urban businesses with agriculture in Keihoku, the project demonstrates the potential to reduce environmental impacts while simultaneously supporting local agriculture and revitalizing the regional economy. We highly commend the project for building a practical model of sustainable regional circulation in which urban and satoyama communities can mutually support one another.

Earth Company

Reason for the award:
Earth Company is a Japan-based nonprofit organization that takes a distinctive approach to addressing social and environmental challenges by focusing on the people working to solve them. Since 2014, it has identified and supported change-makers across the Asia-Pacific region as “impact heroes,” providing not only funding but also long-term support through management assistance, capacity-building and international networks.
Through its impact heroes, Earth Company has delivered positive social impacts to approximately 7.65 million people across 14 countries. By empowering locally rooted leaders who understand the needs of their communities, the organization has developed a model that goes beyond short-term project assistance and enables locally driven solutions to create lasting change.
Its approach is particularly relevant as communities face increasingly complex challenges, including climate-related disasters, political instability and conflict. By providing flexible resources and sustained support to trusted local leaders, Earth Company helps strengthen the resilience of communities and expand the impact of locally driven solutions.

Morinaga Milk Industry Co. Ltd.

Reason for the award:
The Morinaga Milk Industry Co. Ltd. is committed to achieving “food and well-being” under its “Sustainability Medium- to Long-Term Plan 2030,” guided by its slogan, “For the Smiles of All.”
Since 2023, Morinaga has implemented the Smiles & Health for Children program on supporting school meals in mountainous areas of Vietnam, addressing malnutrition and underweight among children by drawing on its expertise in nutrition and health. The initiative supports both the structural and non-structural aspects needed for sustainable change, including improvements to school and kindergarten kitchens and dining spaces, nutrition and hygiene education for teachers and parents, and systems that enable local communities to manage the program independently. As a result, the percentage of underweight children has improved.
The program also promotes employee engagement through an ambassador initiative, in which employees interact with local children and deepen their understanding of social issues.
As Morinaga identifies Vietnam as one of its key markets for overseas business expansion, the initiative also demonstrates how its expertise can contribute to addressing local social challenges while creating a foundation for future business development. We commend Morinaga for creating a sustainable model that combines social value with business perspectives, empowers local communities and has potential for replication in other regions.

Satoyama:
Excellence Award winner

Nasu Machizukuri Hiroba (Nasu Community Development Co. Ltd.)

Reason for the award:
Nasu Machizukuri Hiroba, a project run by Nasu Community Development, has transformed a former elementary school into a “100-year community,” bringing together housing, care, food, culture and spaces for social interaction. By creating an inclusive environment where people of different generations and backgrounds can live, connect to and support one another, the initiative offers a new model for addressing challenges such as Japan’s aging population and the weakening of local communities.
Centered around residences for older adults, the facility includes a cafe, market, cultural spaces and a guesthouse, creating an open community hub used by both residents and people from the surrounding area. By reusing an existing school building and making effective use of local resources, the project also demonstrates how community revitalization can be pursued while reducing environmental impacts and preserving local value for future generations.
Looking beyond conventional approaches to elderly care, Nasu Machizukuri Hiroba seeks to create a community where people can live with dignity, remain active and enjoy meaningful connections throughout their lives. Its integrated approach — bringing together housing, care, culture, food, community engagement and environmental considerations — demonstrates how local assets can be transformed into a foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable society.
We highly commend Nasu Machizukuri Hiroba for presenting a practical and forward-looking model of sustainable community development rooted in local needs and resources.

Suma Universal Beach Project (Specified Nonprofit Corporation)

Reason for the award:
The Suma Universal Beach Project is working to create an environment where everyone — including people with disabilities, older adults and young children — can enjoy nature and take on new challenges, guided by its motto: “Turning everyone’s ‘I can’t’ into ‘I did it!’”
Challenging the conventional notion that people using wheelchairs cannot fully enjoy the beach, the nonprofit corporation combines practical tools such as beach mats and amphibious wheelchairs with creative ideas and support from local communities to create beaches that everyone can enjoy safely and comfortably. Its activities have also expanded beyond the beach to include camping, tree climbing, rice planting and other outdoor experiences.
The project has developed these activities beyond one-time events by working with local organizations, businesses and volunteers to establish systems that can sustain and expand the initiative in communities across Japan. What began in Suma has grown into a nationwide movement, creating new connections within communities through universal beach activities.
Providing everyone with opportunities to experience nature goes beyond simply removing physical barriers. Such experiences can foster self-confidence and inspire people to take on new challenges. We highly commend the project for giving people who may have once given up on experiencing nature the opportunity to say, “I did it,” opening the door to new possibilities and helping create communities across Japan where people of diverse abilities can enjoy and connect with nature together.

Association of Co-development of Women’s Business Succession of Japan

Reason for the award:
The Association of Co-development of Women’s Business Succession of Japan is a pioneering organization addressing Japan’s succession crisis among small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) by focusing on an often-overlooked source of human capital: women who take over and lead family businesses.
While SMEs form the foundation of local economies, a lack of successors has contributed to business closures, putting jobs, local expertise and communities at risk. The association positions female successors not simply as beneficiaries of support, but as key management talent capable of driving business transformation and sustaining regional economies.
Through a nationwide network of female successors plus research, leadership-development programs and the promotion of role models, the association has brought greater visibility to women who have traditionally been overlooked in business succession. In 2026, it conducted a survey of 104 female successors and plans to publish Japan’s first white paper on female business successors. It also highlights outstanding successors through the Atomusu Awards, supported by the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency.
By advancing women’s participation in decision-making, diversifying corporate governance and supporting the continuity of local businesses and employment, the association addresses both the social and governance dimensions of sustainability. We highly commend its innovative approach to connecting gender inclusion with business succession and the long-term resilience of Japan’s regional economies.

Special Award winner

Benibana Promotion Council (secretariat: Ogaru Inc.)

Reason for the award:
The Benibana Promotion Council is redefining Mogami benibana, a traditional safflower variety and historic specialty of Yamagata Prefecture, as a new regional resource for the modern food industry, extending its value beyond traditional dyes and tourism.
The initiative focuses on “safflower yellow,” a water-soluble yellow pigment that has long been discarded during the extraction of the red pigment traditionally used for dyeing. By transforming this previously unused resource into a natural food colorant and culinary ingredient, the council has developed a circular business model that makes full use of the safflower plant.
In collaboration with local businesses and chefs, the council has developed a diverse range of products, including safflower salt, safflower tea, craft beer and seasonings, while expanding distribution channels across souvenirs, food service and commercial applications. Hand-picked safflower cultivation also contributes to local employment, while collaboration with universities, research institutions and prefectural technical organizations supports quality improvement and the development of new applications.
At the same time, the initiative seeks to preserve the genetic resources of the traditional safflower variety and pass Yamagata’s safflower culture on to future generations while promoting its distinctive value as a locally produced natural ingredient in Japan and overseas.
By translating a historic regional resource into new value for the modern food industry, the initiative connects resource circulation, cultural heritage and regional economic development, opening new possibilities for sustainable local industry and markets.
