A traditional British prep school education here in Tokyo

At Phoenix House, every child is valued as an individual. Within our nurturing British prep school environment, we personalize learning and opportunities to help each pupil thrive.

What makes a British prep school the best start for your child? Beyond just academic excellence, they offer a foundation for life. They are called “prep” schools because they prepare pupils for the next step — going on to top senior schools in the U.K. With a long-standing tradition of excellence, prep schools provide a well-rounded education in a close-knit, family-like setting, where small class sizes ensure individual attention. This nurturing environment fosters confidence, resilience and leadership — equipping children for future success.

“Possibly the closest experience to a British prep school that you can get here in Tokyo.” In the words of the Good Schools Guide, Phoenix House brings this academic rigor and spirit of a traditionally British education to life in central Tokyo, while maintaining extremely high

standards and a warm, nurturing environment for children aged 5-11. We are delighted to be formally recognized for our school’s excellence, with accreditations from COBIS (ours was the first school in Japan to be granted Beacon School status), FOBISIA and IAPS, we stand proudly among the world’s most distinguished British international schools.

Our leavers carry their kindness, confidence and grit with them as they move on to new horizons. We prepare our pupils for a variety of destinations after Prep Six. While many transition to Rugby School Japan — also part of the Clarence Education Asia group of schools — others have secured places at competitive independent senior schools in the U.K., including Brighton College, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, the Dragon School, Marlborough College,

Tonbridge School and Wycombe Abbey, to name a few. Whether they are excelling at the U.K.’s top private schools or embracing opportunities closer to home, our children continue to embody the spirit of Phoenix House in everything they do. Once a Phoenix, always a Phoenix!

We cherry-pick the best bits of the English National Curriculum, and with small class sizes ensuring personalized attention and high levels of engagement, academic progress is closely monitored. The pitch of our teaching is high and levels of challenge are important to us, and we celebrate achievement, progress and academic success. Our dedicated U.K.-qualified teachers foster warm and supportive relationships with pupils, encouraging resilience, curiosity and a love of learning. Our approach to learning is grounded in confidence and high expectations — we like to “do less, better.”

Oracy — the magic ingredient at the heart of our British prep school curriculum — involves lessons in speaking that nurture every child’s confidence to articulate their thoughts with clarity and conviction. Our guiding principle, “Confidence to Communicate, Language to Lead,” empowers Phoenixes to find their voice — whether in the classroom, on stage or in the wider world. In an environment where British humor meets high-quality teaching and learning, our pupils thrive, developing the skills and self-confidence to excel in their future studies and beyond.

Now in our fourth year, we have had the unique opportunity to build our community from the ground up — shaping our ethos, traditions and values with intention. We are a rigorous academic school, but place equal emphasis on enrichment, the wider curriculum and, most importantly, kindness. Join one of our weekly school tours, held every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. and discover what makes Phoenix House truly special.
