【Sustainable Japan Special Award】Famiee (general incorporated association)
Founder and CEO
We are very honored to receive the prestigious Sustainable Japan Award.
Famiee has been working for the realization of a society that recognizes diverse family forms.
In today’s society, the values of family and marriage are rapidly diversifying, and more and more people are seeking various family forms, including same-sex couples and de facto married couples, but also single mothers living together and helping each other. In addition, with the aging of society, there is an increasing need for people to have the option of living with someone else after bereavement or separation from their partner in a way other than remarriage.
While we of course stand with legal reform allowing same-sex marriage and a selective surname system, opposition is strong, and it may take longer to realize the goal. However, there are already many people facing difficulties today and tomorrow, even before the legal reform is realized.
Based on our policy of changing society starting with areas that can be changed by the private sector, we have been issuing partnership certificates using blockchain technology and creating a network of companies and local governments that provide services for families based on these certificates.
We strongly hope that this award will help more companies and municipalities to understand our activities and join the Famiee network. This will help to address the issues of LGBTQ+ and married couples with different surnames, as well as to realize a society in which diverse family forms are recognized and everyone can choose the way they want to live. And we believe that our activities together with you will help to push for the amendment of the law.
We will continue to do our utmost to realize a society in which diverse families can live in peace and everyone can live as they choose. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
Reason for the award:
Famiee has been working toward a society that recognizes diverse family forms, including not only same-sex couples and de facto married couples, but also single mothers living together and helping each other, while also supporting legal reforms toward same-sex marriage and a selective surname system.
In February 2021, Famiee began issuing partnership certificates for same-sex partners using blockchain technology. Since then, it has worked to create a network of companies and local governments that provide services for families based on these certificates. Currently, more than 90 companies and organizations, including medical facilities and insurance agencies, have accepted and adopted the system.
Famiee is working toward the issuance of new certificates with the aim of realizing a society in which diverse family forms are commonly recognized.
